The Clock Is Ticking…

Your QuickBooks Desktop file has run your business for years. It knows every vendor, every job, every truck payment. So why change now?

Because Intuit has already started closing the door. And the businesses that plan the move do a lot better than the ones that get pushed.

What’s actually happening with Desktop

Here’s the plain version.

  • In September 2024, Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions for QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus to new U.S. customers.
  • Desktop 2023 lost support on May 31, 2026. No more security updates, and payroll and bank feeds stopped working on that version.
  • Desktop 2024 is the last version of Pro Plus and Premier Plus. Its support ends September 30, 2027.
  • Desktop Enterprise is still sold and supported. Intuit hasn’t announced an end date for it.

Your software won’t refuse to open on the deadline. It just stops doing the things you actually need. A file that opens but can’t run payroll isn’t much help on a Friday afternoon.

What you’re missing on Desktop

For a trade business with crews in the field and a CPA across town, this is the real cost.

  1. Access from anywhere. You, your office manager and your bookkeeper all work in the same file, from the office, the truck or home.
  2. Bank feeds that keep up. Transactions come in daily instead of piling up for month-end.
  3. Your CPA sees the same books you do. No more emailing backup files or accountant’s copies back and forth.

Why before year-end, not after

Timing matters more than most owners realize.

The cleanest move happens at the start of a new year. You close out 2026 in Desktop. Your CPA gets a clean year-end from one system. Then 2027 starts fresh in Online.

The messy version is splitting a year across two systems. That makes year-end harder for you, your bookkeeper and your CPA.

So the planning happens now. A migration isn’t just pushing a button. Old vendor lists, unused items, accounts that haven’t been reconciled in a while. All of that should be cleaned up before the move, not after. Doing it in late December with tax season coming is how files go sideways.

What about Desktop Enterprise?

If you’re on Desktop Enterprise, you aren’t on the same clock. But it’s still worth a look.

Intuit Enterprise Suite is Intuit’s cloud platform for larger and multi-entity businesses. If you’re running more than one company, tracking job costs across crews, or outgrowing what Desktop can report, it’s a conversation worth having. I’m certified in Enterprise Suite, and not many bookkeepers are yet.

Migration doesn’t have to be chaos

Nobody got into HVAC because they love software projects. I get it. Here’s what a good migration looks like.

  1. Review the Desktop file first. Find the problems before they move with you.
  2. Clean up, then convert. Pick a clean cutoff date and move the data.
  3. Tie it out to the penny. Balances in Online should match Desktop before anyone calls it done.

Boring? Yes. Boring is exactly what you want from your books.

Not sure where you stand?

Start here. Open QuickBooks Desktop and press F2. The Product Information window shows your version year. That year tells you your deadline.

If you’re still on Desktop and want a second set of eyes on your timeline, let’s talk.
